The Future of Downstream Processing

By: H. Levine

PDA Annual Meeting: Achieving Manufacturing Excellence: Current Trends and Future Technologies in Bioprocessing; 2016 Mar 14-16; San Antonio, TX.

During the past several years, there have been many significant improvements in the upstream processes for biopharmaceutical product manufacturing, leading to increasing attention on similarly improving downstream processes. Recent innovation in all aspects of downstream processing have the potential to make these unit operations more efficient, leading to more efficient and cost effective manufacturing. This presentation highlights some of these recent improvements, ranging from simplified bioreactor harvest to higher selectivity in chromatographic separations, to entirely continuous manufacturing processes, and also addresses how the historically conservative nature of the pharmaceutical industry in implementing new products and processes.
